2024-12-01Get rid of 'remove_new' relic from platform driver structLinus Torvalds
The continual trickle of small conversion patches is grating on me, and is really not helping. Just get rid of the 'remove_new' member function, which is just an alias for the plain 'remove', and had a comment to that effect: /* * .remove_new() is a relic from a prototype conversion of .remove(). * New drivers are supposed to implement .remove(). Once all drivers are * converted to not use .remove_new any more, it will be dropped. */ This was just a tree-wide 'sed' script that replaced '.remove_new' with '.remove', with some care taken to turn a subsequent tab into two tabs to make things line up. I did do some minimal manual whitespace adjustment for places that used spaces to line things up. Then I just removed the old (sic) .remove_new member function, and this is the end result. 2023-09-21drm: Call drm_atomic_helper_shutdown() at shutdown time for misc driversDouglas Anderson
Based on grepping through the source code these drivers appear to be missing a call to drm_atomic_helper_shutdown() at system shutdown time. Among other things, this means that if a panel is in use that it won't be cleanly powered off at system shutdown time. The fact that we should call drm_atomic_helper_shutdown() in the case of OS shutdown/restart comes straight out of the kernel doc "driver instance overview" in drm_drv.c. All of the drivers in this patch were fairly straightforward to fix since they already had a call to drm_atomic_helper_shutdown() at remove/unbind time but were just lacking one at system shutdown. The only hitch is that some of these drivers use the component model to register/unregister their DRM devices. The shutdown callback is part of the original device. The typical solution here, based on how other DRM drivers do this, is to keep track of whether the device is bound based on drvdata. In most cases the drvdata is the drm_device, so we can just make sure it is NULL when the device is not bound. In some drivers, this required minor code changes. To make things simpler, drm_atomic_helper_shutdown() has been modified to consider a NULL drm_device as a noop in the patch ("drm/atomic-helper: drm_atomic_helper_shutdown(NULL) should be a noop"). 2023-07-21drm: Explicitly include correct DT includesRob Herring
The DT of_device.h and of_platform.h date back to the separate of_platform_bus_type before it as merged into the regular platform bus. As part of that merge prepping Arm DT support 13 years ago, they "temporarily" include each other. They also include platform_device.h and of.h. As a result, there's a pretty much random mix of those include files used throughout the tree. In order to detangle these headers and replace the implicit includes with struct declarations, users need to explicitly include the correct includes. 2023-06-08drm/sti: Convert to platform remove callback returning voidUwe Kleine-König
The .remove() callback for a platform driver returns an int which makes many driver authors wrongly assume it's possible to do error handling by returning an error code. However the value returned is (mostly) ignored and this typically results in resource leaks. To improve here there is a quest to make the remove callback return void. In the first step of this quest all drivers are converted to .remove_new() which already returns void. Trivially convert the sti drm drivers from always returning zero in the remove callback to the void returning variant. With clang's kernel control flow integrity (kCFI, CONFIG_CFI_CLANG), indirect call targets are validated against the expected function pointer prototype to make sure the call target is valid to help mitigate ROP attacks. If they are not identical, there is a failure at run time, which manifests as either a kernel panic or thread getting killed. 2022-11-12drm/sti: Use drm_mode_copy()Ville Syrjälä
struct drm_display_mode embeds a list head, so overwriting the full struct with another one will corrupt the list (if the destination mode is on a list). Use drm_mode_copy() instead which explicitly preserves the list head of the destination mode. Even if we know the destination mode is not on any list using drm_mode_copy() seems decent as it sets a good example. Bad examples of not using it might eventually get copied into code where preserving the list head actually matters. Obviously one case not covered here is when the mode itself is embedded in a larger structure and the whole structure is copied. The field paddr of struct drm_gem_dma_object holds a DMA address, which might actually be a physical address. However, depending on the platform, it can also be a bus address or a virtual address managed by an IOMMU. Hence, rename the field to dma_addr, which is more applicable. As part of retiring the old defines used to specify DAI formats update the hdmi_codec driver to use the modern names, including the variables in the struct hdmi_codec_daifmt exported to the DRM drivers. In updating this I did note that the only use of this information in DRM drivers is to reject clock provider settings, thinking about what this hardware is doing I rather suspect that there might not be any hardware out there which needs the configuration so it may be worth considering just having hdmi-codec support only clock consumer. 2022-02-25drm/sti: plane: Remove redundant zpos initialisationMaxime Ripard
The sti KMS driver will call drm_plane_create_zpos_property() with an init value depending on the plane type. Since the initial value wasn't carried over in the state, the driver had to set it again in sti_plane_reset(). However, the helpers have been adjusted to set it properly at reset, so this is not needed anymore. 2022-01-27drm/sti: Add support for the nomodeset kernel parameterJavier Martinez Canillas
According to disable Documentation/admin-guide/kernel-parameters.txt, this parameter can be used to disable kernel modesetting. DRM drivers will not perform display-mode changes or accelerated rendering and only the system framebuffer will be available if it was set-up. But only a few DRM drivers currently check for nomodeset, make this driver to also support the command line parameter. Link drm_fb_cma_helper.o into drm_cma_helper.ko if CONFIG_DRM_KMS_HELPER has been set. Remove CONFIG_DRM_KMS_CMA_HELPER config option. Selecting KMS helpers and CMA will now automatically enable CMA KMS helpers. Some drivers' Kconfig files did not correctly select KMS or CMA helpers. Fix this as part of the change.
