2024-10-22drm/i915/display: Remove kstrdup_const() and kfree_const() usageChristophe JAILLET
kstrdup_const() and kfree_const() can be confusing in code built as a module. In such a case, it does not do what one could expect from the name of the functions. The code is not wrong by itself, but in such a case, it is equivalent to kstrdup() and kfree(). So, keep thinks simple and straightforward. 2024-03-26drm/i915/backlight: Do not bump min brightness to max on enableGareth Yu
Historically the expectation was to set brightness to max on enable, if it was zero. However, the policy should be to preserve brightness across disable/enable, for example the userspace might want to dim the brightness before disable (e.g. on suspend) and gradually bring it back up after enable (e.g. on resume). If the brightness gets bumped to max at enable, this causes flicker as the userspace expects the brightness to have been preserved across disable/enable. 2024-01-03drm/i915/mtl: Add fake PCH for Meteor LakeHaridhar Kalvala
Correct the implementation trying to detect MTL PCH with the MTL fake PCH id. On MTL, both the North Display (NDE) and South Display (SDE) functionality reside on the same die (the SoC die in this case), unlike many past platforms where the SDE was on a separate PCH die. The code is (badly) structured today in a way that assumes the SDE is always on the PCH for modern platforms, so on platforms where we don't actually need to identify the PCH to figure out how the SDE behaves (i.e., all DG1/2 GPUs as well as MTL and LNL),we've been assigning a "fake PCH" as a quickhack that allows us to avoid restructuring a bunch of the code.we've been assigning a "fake PCH" as a quick hack that allows us to avoid restructuring a bunch of the code. 2022-11-11drm/i915: stop including i915_irq.h from i915_trace.hJani Nikula
Turns out many of the files that need i915_reg.h get it implicitly via {display/intel_de.h, gt/intel_context.h} -> i915_trace.h -> i915_irq.h -> i915_reg.h. Since i915_trace.h doesn't actually need i915_irq.h, makes sense to drop it, but that requires adding quite a few new includes all over the place. Prefer including i915_reg.h where needed instead of adding another implicit include, because eventually we'll want to split up i915_reg.h and only include the specific registers at each place. Also some places actually needed i915_irq.h too. Before this commit when we want userspace to use the acpi_video backlight device we register both the GPU's native backlight device and acpi_video's firmware acpi_video# backlight device. This relies on userspace preferring firmware type backlight devices over native ones. Registering 2 backlight devices for a single display really is undesirable, don't register the GPU's native backlight device when another backlight device should be used. Commit 20f85ef89d94 ("drm/i915/backlight: use unique backlight device names") added support for multiple backlight devices on dual panel systems, but did so with error handling on -EEXIST from backlight_device_register(). Unfortunately, that triggered a warning in dmesg all the way down from sysfs_add_file_mode_ns() and sysfs_warn_dup(). Move the panel specific VBT parsing to happen during the output probing stage. Needs to be done because the VBT parsing will need to look at the EDID to determine the correct panel_type on some machines. We split the parsed VBT data (i915->vbt) along the same boundary. For the moment we just hoist all the panel specific stuff into connector->panel.vbt since that seems like the most convenient place for eg. the backlight code. Note that we simply drop the drrs type check from intel_drrs_frontbuffer_update() since that operates on the whole device rather than a specific connector/encoder. But the check was just a micro optimization so removing it doesn't actually mattter for correctness. TODO: Lot's of cleanup to be done in the future. intel_backlight_set_pwm_level() At least the Bay Trail LPSS PWM controller used with DSI panels on many Bay Trail tablets seems to leave the PWM pin in whatever state it was (high or low) ATM that the PWM gets disabled. Combined with some panels not having a separate backlight-enable pin this leads to the backlight sometimes staying on while it should not (when the pin was high during PWM-disabling). First calling intel_backlight_set_pwm_level() will ensure that the pin is always low (or high for inverted brightness panels) since the passed in duty-cycle is 0% (or 100%) when the PWM gets disabled fixing the backlight sometimes staying on. With the exception of ext_pwm_disable_backlight() all other foo_disable_backlight() functions call intel_backlight_set_pwm_level() already before disabling the backlight, so this change also aligns ext_pwm_disable_backlight() with all the other disable() functions.
